By default, DVD support isn’t available on Ubuntu 18.04 for legal and technical reasons. Most commercially available DVDs are copy-righted and need the right codec installed before using. The decryption or decoder software for these DVDs are not included with Ubuntu.
In order to play DVDs, you need to have the right codecs installed. A codec is a piece of software that allows applications to read a video or audio format. If your movie player software doesn’t find the right codecs, it may offer to install them for you.
If you need to play commercially available DVDs on Ubuntu, you must use software and programs that can handle DVD copyright protection. One of these open source programs is Fluendo.
Fluendo works with Linux systems and should be legal in most countries. However, Fluendo is not free.
Alternatively, you can use the unlicensed decoder for Linux, but they are not permitted by law in most countries. So using it may not be legal. Ubuntu allows you to install these codecs and use but you’re doing it at your own risk.
To install the unlicensed decoder that are available on Ubuntu, run the commands below.
